People argue about the term "Cracker" but is does not matter. In FL, the word comes out of state history and is a badge of honor. Crackers were grit-and-spit farmers with radically independent, nomadic, anarchical and combative disposition. They were taught to fight, cuss and distrust.
Towns people were no-count "skeetsters" money hungry folks who were naive to the wily ways of Crackers. Worse than fleas were government and politics which were distrusted along with strangers. A real Cracker was a self-reliant farmer who harbored a hard-fisted will and got mean-dog mad and shot-to-kill when wronged. Used from "Cracker Outlaws" by Lee King
Old-time cow hunters who dove into the swamps and palmettos and indured harsh FL climate changes to drive there large herds across Florida to shipping points. Popping and cracking long cowhide whips so loudly that they could be heard for miles. Because of this they became known as FL Crackers.
I was taught to raise Cracker bred roosters the way there Grandfathers taught them, the same way there Grandfathers taught them. This blood still flows through my fowl. I'm proud to have been born in FL and raise these Ol'Cracker American Game Cocks!
